peace corps

May 6, 2008 / by freedlee

Self volunteering has always been part of human. Whether it is to help our neighbor moves their personal belonging to their moving truck or to help a complete stranger with direction. Our class, Multi Lit, got to meet Axton who personally gave 2 years of his life to help a village he has no relation with. The way he presents to us, it wasn’t that he lost 2 years of his life but gain experience beyond what he could of ever in 2 years. Axton volunteer himself through Peace Corps. Peace Corps provide the necessary training before the actually sent him out to the field. These include language and cultural training, making sure he is able to survive where he was sent. As of now, he is still working for Peace Corps as a recruiter.

You can visit the Peace Corps at http://www.peacecorps.gov/. The site offers three different languages (Francis, Spanish and English). There is a lot of information that you can get from the site. You can learn everything about on the “About the Peace Corps” link. One interesting fact that I pick up is that Peace Corps serve in “74 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East”. Imagine how many numbers of volunteers Peace Corps have to sent out to each of those countries. Other info is particular about the welfare of the volunteers. This will ensure that the volunteer knows what they are actually volunteering for.

Beside from learning a new language and culture, you will gain leadership and career skills. Upon returning, Peace Corps offer living expense, loans, vacation and medical benefits. There is also more that is being offer to returning volunteers. You can personally apply online with the link “Apply Now” or if you don’t want to volunteer, you can donate funds to which ever section of Peace Corps you desire.

One of the most interesting sections in the Peace Corps website is the blogs that current volunteer has post.  Reading about Ian adding up all the miles that she has travel is beyond all the traveling I did per year. She strongly declare “in no way, regret joining Peace Corps and I would encourage many of you to also join”. Another interesting volunteer is Jeremiah. He enjoy his time so much in Brazil saying “I just came from the biggest and best party ON THE PLANET”. The thing is how he got there. The slow pace with lots of border control was his transportation. That was the best part for Jeremiah.

If you feel a need to get out, not just out at night, but out for 2 years then Peace Corps is where you want to start. Everything you need to know can be found on the website I mention above. This way, you can do all the research you want to on a single website to ensure yourself that you are prepare for a life changing decision.
